Logline
A disgraced starship pilot has to patch up her rocky relationship with her ambassador mother — who's now suffering from dementia — to save them both and salvage a treaty with an alien race that holds the key to our future in space.
Synopsis
In the 23rd century, humans have discovered a set of “currents” that enable faster-than-light travel. We've made contact with aliens. But the currents are dangerous, ships disappear all the time, and we have very limited maps.
Amina (30s, Kenyan/Indian descent, queer) is a starship pilot, just out of prison after sabotaging a critical diplomatic mission three years ago with the Antarens — a race that promised to give us extensive current maps. No one will hire her. And she has an alien “construct,” Koris, embedded in her mind since the mission. Only she can see him. He appears human, but struggles to understand us, and either argues with her or asks questions about humanity, always at the worse possible times.
Amina ends up taking care of her mother Ivy (70s), who was the ambassador on that mission. She retired and suffering from dementia. They've always had a difficult relationship, and it's getting worse now due to Ivy’s health issues, Amina’s unemployment, and pressure from successful brother Loren to “get a regular job.”
The story moves between the present in NYC, flashbacks to the mission, and VR/memory simulations. Amina tries to reconnect with Ivy in the present, deal with Koris, and figure out what really went wrong on the mission and in their relationship. She realizes there may be a way to salvage the treaty and get the maps, but it means setting aside their differences and working together – which may be harder than making a deal with the Antarens.
