We're thrilled to celebrate Filmshop's 15th anniversary with a special summer residency at Governors Island. Throughout the summer, the Filmshop House will be a hub of activity, offering a series of film screenings, filmmaker Q&As, and hands-on workshops on the craft of filmmaking led by our talented community members. Our residency will also feature a retrospective exhibition that showcases Filmshop's evolution over the years.

This is a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of filmmaking, learn from experienced filmmakers, and get inspired by the creativity of our Filmshop community. Whether you're an aspiring filmmaker or a film enthusiast, our summer residency offers something for everyone.

May 25, 1 PM & 3 PM: Free screen­ing of Artist Unkown, writ­ten and direct­ed by Cinder Chou, fol­lowed by a Q+A.

June 2, 1 PM: Unit­ed State­less pod­cast lis­ten­ing host­ed by cre­ator Ali Rivera

June 8, 1 PM & 3 PM: PreSkool: Sub­li­ma­tion Series & Music Videos

June 14 – 16, 1 PM & 3 PM: Hear, Eat, Home doc­u­men­tary screen­ing and exhi­bi­tion of works by Hsuan Yu Pan (meet & greet with the film­mak­er on June 15).

June 21-23 11 AM-5 PM: HELL HATH NO FURY, a collection of badass martial arts and action shorts by female and non-binary filmmakers. Including films by Filmshoppers Eden Martinez and Kerry Lacy, Oscar-nominated director Jessica Sanders, award-winning actor Katherine Hughes, and many more!

June 22 - 1-4 PM: Pitching Without Panic with Craig T. Williams: In this workshop writer/producer Craig T. Williams will share valuable tips that will help you articulate your unique voice and brand.

June 29: 4 - 8 PM: Filmshop Open Mic Night! Get ready for a night of entertainment, creativity, and fun. Whether you're a seasoned performer or a first-timer, this event is the perfect opportunity to showcase your talent.

June 29th - 1 - 3 PM: Pitch Yourself, Pitch Your Projects.....Making It Real! with Jim Arnoff: Join your fellow Filmshoppers and Entertainment Career Coach/Talent Agent Consultant Jim Arnoff in an immersive, in-person workshop to get in-the-moment feedback from Jim and your peers on your pitching style. July 6th - Filmshop Presents Potluck and Mixer: An opportunity for anyone interested in participating in a project to meet up, crew up, and share resources. Open to anyone who wants to hang out as well! We will be screening Filmshop Presents films from years past. 

July 13th - Comedy Show with Danny Shaw!

July 13th, 6 - 9 PM - Filmshop Summer Sound Sessions: Join us for a showcase/open performance of stellar independent local musicians!

July 14th - Art Nerds and Film Folks: Short film screening and photography exhibit.

July 20th, 1- 4 PM - Short Shorts: Join us for ‘Short Shorts’, a film screening and talkback of cinematic brevity, where every second counts, and every frame tells a story!A screening of a collection of very short short films, curated by Tatiana Florival. RSVP HERE.

August 2nd & 3rd - Toon Gulch X Filmshop: A collection of animated films curated by Birgit Rathsmann. RSVP HERE.

August 4th, 1 PM - Credible Fear Screening and Talkback: Join DocShopper and Breakthrough Series Fellow, Gabrielle Ewing as she screens a work-in-progress sneak peek of her forthcoming feature-length documentary Credible Fear. Credible Fear follows the stories of Yojana, an asylum seeker, and Amy, a pro bono attorney. August 9th, 1 - 4 PM - Caucasus Cinema X Filmshop - Screening and Q&A: Experience a unique collection of short films from the Republic of Georgia's filmmaking intensive, and engage with filmmakers Caiti Lattimer and Darren O'Brien during our Q&A session. Learn about their journey and the global collaboration that brings these films to life. RSVP HERE.

August 10th, 11 AM - 1 PM - Queer Shorts X Filmshop Part 1: Join us for an extraordinary weekend dedicated to queer storytelling through film, curated by Christopher Dawes, Filmshop Treasurer, Board Member, and seasoned programmer for three regional LGBTQ film festivals. RSVP HERE.

August 11th, 11 AM - 1 PM - Queer Shorts X Filmshop Part 2: Experience a captivating array of animated shorts from the 2024 festival, focusing on ghostly tales and thematic elements of drinking. This largely American selection will bring together diverse voices and unique artistic expressions in animation. A post-screening Q&A with the filmmakers and curator will provide a deeper understanding of the stories behind the animations. RSVP HERE.

August 11th, 2 - 5 PM - Unstuck: Break those stubborn blocks and unlock the story within: Led by Albert Beniada, the Executive Director of Filmshop, "Unstuck" combines proven writing techniques with the natural beauty and rich history of Governors Island to create a truly transformative experience. Whether you're struggling with plot development, character arcs, or dialogue, this workshop will provide the tools and inspiration to move forward. RSVP HERE.

August 17th, 11 AM - 5 PM - FILMSHOP House Fest Day 1: Experience a day filled with action-packed sequences, stunning animations, groundbreaking queer cinema, and captivating stories from Georgia. Enjoy screenings of films crafted by our talented Filmshop members and engage in discussions that inspire and challenge. RSVP for Day 1 HERE.

August 18th, 11 AM - 5 PM - FILMSHOP House Fest Day 2: Continue your cinematic exploration with themed showcases that include queer shorts, Caucasus cinema, and the thrilling "Hell Hath No Fury" series. Each screening will be followed by a Q&A session, providing deeper insights into the films and their creation. RSVP for Day 2 HERE.

Silent Writing: Our sundrenched upstairs rooms are reserved for silent writing on Sundays from 11 am - 5 pm. Grab a partner, grab some paper, pick a prompt from our idea bucket if you need help getting started, and get to work!

Lending Library: Feel free to take or add a book, drawing, clothing, film equipment, etc. to our free library located on the first floor of the house.
