Synopsis
Exes at a Wedding is a dramedy short film about two ex-lovers who end up pre-gaming in a hotel room together in preparation for their mutual friends’ wedding. With every other person they know preoccupied with wedding party duties, the film centers around the exes' first meeting after their split four years prior, and the awkwardness that occurs when they attempt to establish a friendship when the two had previously only had a romantic and sexual connection.
Over the course of the film, the exes rediscover what made the relationship work initially, but also realize that they've become different people as egos and expectations surface. Despite circumstances that push both exes' boundaries, the two relearn and reconnect, with the two parting ways as closer friends, appreciative of the time they’ve had with each other.
Additional Project Info
Exes at a Wedding is loosely based on a recent, real-life experience I had when I attended my friends' wedding in May 2022. While I should've known better, considering the bride and groom were our mutual friends, I hadn't checked to see if my ex would be also be present before leaving for Wisconsin. As a result, this wedding unexpectedly became the first time my ex and I had seen each other in four years.
Like in the film, killing time in the same space forced us to become reacquainted with each other. The sheer absurdism of the situation my ex and I found ourselves in didn't escape me. I recall telling my ex that it felt like we were stuck in the premise of a cheesy Netflix rom-com. The encounter piqued my interest in how relationships change over time. No longer lovers, I was free to recognize his good and revel in it without worrying whether we would “end up” together. Instead, I came to the conclusion that the friendship we had was good. That it was enough.
