OUR WORKSHOPs

Our works-in-progress workshops are at the core of our community. It is the space where we come together in the real world to gain fresh perspective on work, to flex our (constructively) critical muscles, and to be part of a fellowship with other filmmakers. There is a bond that organically develops meeting face to face each week, and the relationships, both personal and professional, that form in Filmshop are truly the lifeblood of our collective.

As a member of Filmshop, you are able to join a chapter for a 15-week season of our workshop in both spring and fall.

What do we do in the workshop?

At each meeting, two Filmshop members present their current works-in-progress to solicit constructive feedback from the group. Discussions are moderated, and presenters consult with a chapter facilitator in advance to help ensure a productive session. Every week, spirited discussions inevitably ensue, and it is as much a learning experience for the members giving feedback as it is for those presenting.

Members also announce their weekly goals and asks to the group. Meetings are an opportunity for members to check in and help each other stay the course on projects. We also regularly invite speakers from within the filmmaking community (often Filmshoppers themselves) to hold informal master classes.

Workshop Philosophy

Our workshop is a safe space where members can share their work and solicit constructive feedback. We believe everyone in the room should have the opportunity to offer his or her opinions. It is each member’s prerogative to determine the format of the discussion, the type of feedback he or she is seeking, and how to best incorporate that feedback.

We aim to keep chapters intimate, yet large enough to ensure a variety of member perspectives: around 20 members per chapter. Membership to our community is selective. To foster a rich discourse, we seek out diversity across gender, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, and areas of expertise. And while we each bring different skills and experiences to the table, we are united by the drive to make our best work.

Filmshop provides a safe and open forum for an international community of filmmakers, participants, and audience members.
