Joe Kavitski is an artist, filmmaker, writer, and musician interested in the concept of creating an all-encompassing sensory experience while blending the dichotomy of darkness and light, and the beauty found therein. Fusing formal methodologies of the past with fantastical contemporary concepts, Joe pushes the boundaries of imposed limitations and antique aesthetic principles.
Joe has a BFA in Film, Photography, and Visual Arts from Ithaca College (’06) and is a co-founder of Aligned Creative, LLC, a full service film and video production company based in New York City. Founded in 2008 by Ithaca College Alumni, Aligned Creative strives to produce intelligent, high quality productions, while fostering a strong sense of community and a commitment to artistic and personal growth.
He is currently working on his first feature length film, Nightmarriage, an experimental 8mm art-narrative deconstructing the anatomy of failed matrimony.
Projects
- 2010 – The Way of Heaven. 4 min. Digital. Writer/Director. A comatose housewife’s personal escort through yet another day of mundane rapture.
- 2009 – Krazdale: A Smorgasbord of Absurdity!!!. Digital. Co-Creator/Writer. An interactive webseries which allows viewers the opportunity to write scripts for the show that will actually be produced.
- 2009 – Ghost Erasers. 3min. Digital. Writer/Director. A visual poem of a young girl’s personal apocalypse.
- 2008 – Beauty is in the Eye “Scream” of the Beholder. 5 min. Digital. Writer/Director. A demented ice cream man’s delusional love for a lactose intolerant woman obsessed with ice cream.
- 2006 – Scarlet Rose. 4 min. Animation. Writer/Director/Artist. Scarlet Rose uses a combination of rotoscoping techniques to animate over live action film movement frame by frame. A gothic tragedy, it features original prose (written on Valentine’s Day 2006) to illustrate the depth of the protagonist’s own dark elegance. It is a tale of passion and romance, of love and lies, but above all, it is a story saturated in betrayal, and the consequences thereof.
- 2006 – Surrendering Serendipity: A Rock Opera. 30 min. 16mm. Writer/Director. God places an angel inside the mind of a suicidal girl, Sue, so the seraph can understand why a person would take their own life. A literal mental hospital within Sue’s psyche, this musical dreamscape encompasses erotic Freudian transference from pedophilic parenting to pediatric projection where the unreliable shadow of memory casts light on a very real reality.
- 2006 – My Pandora. 3 min. Tri-X Reversal. Writer/Director. A stop-motion portrayal of euphoric remembrance: first love, first loss, and the release of contained adoration into a life of isolation and regret. This vignette of memory was shot entirely with a Bolex camera on a 2 x 1 ft table, with hand painted abstract backgrounds.
