When I was sixteen, I failed the California High School Writing Proficiency Test. Apparently, my recounting—prompted by the question, “What book had the biggest impact on your life”—of the time I dropped the Oxford English Dictionary (O.E.D.) on my pinkie toe and was forced out of the 1998 Greater Sacramento Area Roller Derby Championships with a hairline fracture, was neither proficient nor amusing.

It’s all been down hill since then.
