FAQ

1) What does The FilmShop do?

Each year we have two seasons, Spring and Fall. Each week of the season we meet up and workshop a member’s project. Spirited discussions ensue that usually result in valuable feedback for the filmmaker. At the end of the season, we all make 2-minute films about a particular topic, and then have a big screening party at a great Brooklyn or Hong Kong venue.

The creative collaboration exists 24/7 on our members only website, where people can post video, chat, and form online groups to work together. We also have partnerships with festivals, filmmaking collectives, and non-profits that help promote filmmaking.

2) How does one join The FilmShop?

Applications are accepted a couple of weeks before each season. Online application coming soon.

3) Can I join The FilmShop if I am not directing a film? What if I am only starting out my career?

Yes and yes. We accept people who are editors, animators, DPs, and producers. We also accept people who are relatively inexperienced, provided that they have passion, and are working on something strong.

4) Does it cost anything to join?

Yes. Dues are $50 per season, which go to pay for rent for the space we use for workshopping.

5) What are you looking for in applicants to The FilmShop?

We’re looking for talented content creators who are eager to collaborate, and who have something to contribute to the group. Most importantly is that you are working on a project that is compelling and can be work-shopped with our collective. As for experience, we’ve got members who are fresh out of film school, and those with many years experience in the industry.

6) I’m a festival programmer looking for films. Where can I see them?

Check out our public Screening Room for an initial sample of work. We also have a curated private screening room specifically for programmers. Contact us here to get access.
